Lightning Storm- Pithing Needleable?

Asked by Bovine073 7 years ago

The dreaded Ad Nauseam matchup for many modern decks runs Lightning Storm as a win condition.

Can effects such as Pithing Needle or Suppression Field turn off Lightning Storm entirely?

No. Activated abilities read "Cost : Effect" and are only found on permanents. You're looking for effects like Nevermore or Meddling Mage, although Counterspells and hand disruption are more versatile.

There seems to be a Cost:Effect on Lightning Storm.

That is more of a card effect rather than activation cost.

Oh, didn't see the permanents clause, my apologies.

The answers given here are all incorrect. Lightning Storm very clearly has an activated ability, which Pithing Needle can affect.

Activated abilities can also be found on cards in any zone. Derevi, Empyrial Tactician has an activated ability that functions from the command zone. Reassembling Skeleton has an activated ability that functions from the graveyard. Rubblehulk has an activated ability that functions from the hand.
