Lifelink and Double Strike

If my Child of Night enchanted with Battle Mastery is blocked by, say, Ajani's Pridemate, since the Child of Night would kill the Pridemate during the assigning of first strike damage, would I still gain life from normal combat damage, even though there is nothing to damage?

No - for exactly the reason you described. The only way you would gain the second amount of life is if the creature had Trample.
