Lifeline and nether traitor

Asked by theseax 6 years ago

So I have a question about an interaction between Lifeline and Nether Traitor if nether traitor is in the discard pile and a board wipe is played while lifeline is on the field. Could I activate nether traitor's ability to put him on the field to be the creature on the field for lifeline to then bring back the creatures destroyed? Or would I only be bringing back the nether traitor?

Note the errata'd text on Lifeline:

Whenever a creature dies, if another creature is on the battlefield, return the first card to the battlefield under its owner's control at the beginning of the next end step.

It includes an intervening if-clause, which means it won't trigger if the condition isn't met. So unless there's a creature on the battlefield after all creatures have been destroyed (because it has Indestructible, for example), it won't trigger at all. You won't be able to bring back Nether Traitor in time for it to trigger, as the if-clause's condition is checked right when a creature is put into the graveyard.

This is incorrect, it depends how you stack the triggers. If a Wrath of God style effect destroys all creatures at once, the ability will trigger for each creature, as they see eachother as they die. Because of the Intervening If clause the ability would normally fail on resolution, as there would no longer be a creature to satisfy the Intervening If clause. However, if there is a new creature, either due to Nether Traitor returning or an instant like Raise the Alarm the clause would be satisfied and the creature would be returned at end of turn. The way you want to stack the triggers is your creatures triggering Lifeline, Nether Traitor triggering, your opponents' creatures triggering Lifeline. The result will be the Intervening If failing so your opponent's creatures don't return, then Nether Traitor returning, then your creatures passing the check for Lifeline creating the delayed triggered ability to return them at the start of the end step.

For each creature dying Lifeline triggers, as well as Nether Traitor. You can put all these triggers on the stack in any order, but only ones that resolve after Nether Traitor returns will come back. The creatures themselves come back at the end step, and the order they come back is chosen at that time rather than relating to the order chosen when the board wipe happened. It's worth noting that Nether Traitor will trigger many times, but once you choose to pay the mana all other triggers will be irrelevant. You could choose to have it's triggers go between each Lifeline trigger just so you have the option to return it sooner or latter based on opponent's responses, but it's unlikely to matter. Most importantly is just having your creature on one side of it's trigger(s) and your opponents' on the other side. Not sure if this was any less confusing.
