Lazav, the multifarious

Asked by Segala 5 years ago

I have a question about the card Lazav, the Multifarious.

95% of the creatures I saw said when (name of the creature) does combat damage something happens. The question here is how does Lazav work with this. As an example: I use Lazav, the Multifarious to copy Phage the Untouchable and I deal combat damage to my opponent. On phage it says when PHAGE does combat damage to my opponent he lose the game. But on Lazav it says he keeps his name.

So does the text change for when lazav does combat damage ? Or does he have both name (Lazav, the multifarious Phage the untouchable)?

How does he works.

Whenever you read text that states something like "whenever Phage the Untouchable does"... consider it to be saying "whenever "this creature" does"... If Lazav is a copy of Phage those abilities would instead state "whenever Lazav, the Multifarious does"...

In this example you don't have to worry about the entering the battlefield text because in order for Lazav to copy it has to already be on the battlefield.

Does this help clear it up?

201.4b If an ability of an object refers to that object by name, and an object with a different name gains that ability, each instance of the first name in the gained ability that refers to the first object by name should be treated as the second name.

You'll find related information in the rest of rule 201.
