Lands that become creatures & counters

Asked by Nocturnal Outcast 8 years ago

So, both myself and my opponent had Inkmoth Nexus, I used my Inkmoth to block his, and he used Giant Growth to buff his to a 4/4 to save his.

The question is, mine obviously dies, and his lives, but my inkmoth would have dealt a -1 / -1 counter to his inkmoth.

When his inkmoth returns to being a land, would it drop the -1 / -1 counter, or would it stay on, causing it to die as soon as it became a creature again?

Any kind of permanent can have any kind of counter on it, even if that counter doesn't inherently mean anything to that permanent. -1/-1 and +1/+1 counters will remain on animated permanents after they're no longer animated.

So the situation plays out as you guess. The -1/-1 counter will remain on Inkmoth Nexus, and Inkmoth Nexus will die the next time it's animated unless some static ability is changing its P/T from the moment it becomes a creature.

Thanks Epoch, yea that's what I thought, my opponent argued otherwise and since I couldn't find a ruling in middle of the game I just let him play it out the way he thought it worked, but at least in the future I'll have better support for the actual ruling.
