Kuldotha Rebirth interaction

Asked by likasumbody 5 years ago

Hi,

If I have an atrifact on the battlefield and in my main phase I cast Kuldotha Rebirth by sacraficing that artifact, can my opponent respond to that by casting a destroy artifact instant spell? And if so, what happens to my Kuldotha Rebirth ? Does it go to the graveyard or resolve since I sac'ed as an additional cost or back to my hand as an illegal spell? Very confused.. Thanks for advice!

Your opponent cannot counter your spell by destroying the artifact you intend to sac. Since Kuldotha Rebirth asks you to sacrifice an artifact as an additional cost, the artifact will not be on the battlefield to target when Kuldotha Rebirth goes onto the stack. Part of casting the spell is that all costs (including additional costs) are paid.

601.2. To cast a spell is to take it from where it is (usually the hand), put it on the stack, and pay its costs, so that it will eventually resolve and have its effect. Casting a spell includes proposal of the spell (rules 601.2a-d) and determination and payment of costs (rules 601.2f-h). To cast a spell, a player follows the steps listed below, in order. A player must be legally allowed to cast the spell to begin this process (see rule 601.3). If, at any point during the casting of a spell, a player is unable to comply with any of the steps listed below, the casting of the spell is illegal; the game returns to the moment before the casting of that spell was proposed (see rule 721, "Handling Illegal Actions").

Sorry, I meant to say the artifact will not be on the battlefield to target when your opponent has the opportunity to respond to Kuldotha Rebirth being put onto the stack.
