Kodama of the Center Tree

Asked by PhotogenicParasympathetic 6 years ago

Can a creature with a high-enough soulshift target itself?

For example: If I have Kodama of the Center Tree and four other spirits in play, it has Soulshift 5. When the Kodama dies, can I target it to return to hand?

Also, at what point does Kodama's ability check the number of spirits I have in play? For this to work, would I need Kodama + 4 spirits, or Kodama + 5 spirits?

Soulshift triggers when the creature dies, meaning put in the graveyard from the battlefield. This means that Kodama will be in the graveyard when you target it, but the ability (that works only on the battlefield) will use the last-known information of the creature - if you controlled five spirits (including Kodama) when Kodama died, you will be able to target a creature with CMC 5 or less, which includes Kodama.

To my knowledge, this is the only card capable of doing this - all other cards with Soulshift have Soulshift N with N being exactly 1 less than their CMC.
