Kalitas and Virulent plague

I just wanted to know what happens if you have Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet and Virulent Plague in play, and an opponent creature dies: does the token die instantly or is there a way where you can pay and activate Kalita's ability first?

State based actions (SBA) are always checked before a player would receive priority. One of the criteria for SBA is checking if a creature has a toughness of 0 or less. If one does, it's put into its owner's graveyard as part of the SBA. No one can respond to this, including you not being able to activate his ability.
