Kaalia and kicker costs

Asked by ThisIsBullshit 9 years ago

So how does Kaalia of the Vast's ability work with something like Desolation Angel? Desolation Angel says "as it comes into play", but I thought kicker was an additional cost that you can only use when hardcasting it.

So if I cheat out Desolation Angel with Kaalia of the Vast, am I allowed to pay the kicker?

You may not pay any kicker costs when putting a creature into play. Kicker has been errated to read like this; "You may pay an additional (cost) as you cast this spell."

You are only able to pay kicker costs when you "cast" or "play" (cast and play are the exact same thing when referring to non-lands).

the oracle text is also the following

Kicker WW (You may pay an additional WW as you cast this spell.)

Kaalia says "put .... from your hand onto the battlefield" This is not the same thing as casting. You cannot pay the kicker cost.

No - just as you thought, the kicker is an additional cost that you only get to pay when casting the spell. Kaalia just puts the Desolation Angel into play without casting, so there is no opportunity to pay the kicker. Then the ETB triggers and destroys all your lands because the kicker was not paid.
