Jotun Grunt

Asked by DiscoVeggie 8 years ago

Hi!

I recently encountered this card called Jotun Grunt, and my opponent keeps insisting that the number of cards put from a graveyard to the bottom of a library is also cumulative, such that after each upkeep, the number of cards increases from 2, 3, and so on. I argued that the card specifically said TWO CARDS only, and so the number of cards should not change. Also, nothing on the card remotely hints that the number of cards should increase.

Which one of us is correct?

Neither of you are correct, but your friends are more correct.

The number of cards increases from 2, 4, 6, and so on, not 2, 3, 4

There's Upkeep, and Cumulative Upkeep. You pay a Cumulative upkeep an extra time for each time you've payed the upkeep.

Read the reminder text for Cumulative Upkeep, It says that you pay the upkeep for each age counter on the permanent, and you put an age counter on it every time you pay the upkeep.

None :) The number of cards being moved around increases by 2 every turn.

You execute the instructions for each age counter, and the instructions are to put two cards from a single graveyard on the bottom of it's owner's library. That is what you'll do in your upkeep if it has one counter, and you'll do it twice if it has two counters - meaning four cards in total. Also, the graveyards you'll pick the set of two cards from can be different for each age counter's payment.

Always check the Gatherer rulings before posting a question.

7/15/2006: When paying Jötun Grunt's cumulative upkeep, you may choose a different graveyard for each age counter. For example, if it has three age counters on it, you may put four cards from your graveyard on the bottom of your library and two cards from your opponent's graveyard on the bottom of his or her library. However, you can't put five cards from your graveyard on the bottom of your library and one card from your opponent's graveyard on the bottom of his or her library.

This ruling makes it fairly apparent that the cumulative upkeep is additive (if you didn't know the rules for cumulative upkeep beforehand) and that it's additive in units of [whole CU cost] rather than [partial cost].
