Jhoira of the Ghitu + Genesis Wave

Asked by TJMadMan 9 years ago

Can I use Jhoira of the Ghitu activated ability to suspend Genesis Wave (to get around the color requirement of green), and pay for X when suspend expires and i cast Genesis Wave without paying its mana cost.

From what i have read i can, but i would like to be certain before i introduce the interaction to my playgroup.

As always thanks in advanced. And if you'd like to view the deck this interaction is in, the deck is ==> Upkeep Deck

No. When you cast a spell without paying its mana cost, defaults to 0. You cannot change this. The only way to declare a value for in Genesis Wave is to cast Genesis Wave for its mana cost.

In short, you will genesis wave with x=0.

You cannot simultaneously get something for free and then pay for what is already free. It does not work like that, like, anywhere in the physical world.

409.1b ... If the spell or ability has a variable cost that will be paid as it's being played (such as an X in its mana cost), the player announces the value of that variable at this time. If the spell or ability has alternative, additional, or other special costs that will be paid as it's being played (such as buyback, kicker, or convoke costs), the player announces his or her intentions to pay any or all of those costs (see rule 409.1f). You can't apply two alternative methods of playing or two alternative costs to a single spell or ability.

You have already paid one alternative cost for the spell - it is free. You are not allowed to choose a value for X if you cast it for an alternative cost. So, you do not get to anything else to its cost.

X spells and alternative casting costs do not mix together well.

There's actually a more direct rule if you're going for CR quotes:

107.3b If a player is casting a spell that has an in its mana cost, the value of X isn't defined by the text of that spell, and an effect lets that player cast that spell while paying neither its mana cost nor an alternative cost that includes X, then the only legal choice for X is 0. This doesn't apply to effects that only reduce a cost, even if they reduce it to zero. See rule 601, "Casting Spells."
