Is Noble Purpose giving my creatures Lifelink, or is it another lifegaining ability?

Asked by MrFlungus 9 years ago

So I had this Situation with my friend: I had a Noble Purpose and a Rhox Faithmender on the battlefield. Now if Rhox Faithmender would deal one damage, I would gain 1 life with its lifelink ability, and then another 1 life because of its second ability. Now I was wondering, since a creature can't have lifelink more than once, does my Noble Purpose still trigger for this one damage, and give me another one life? (which then would also be twiced by Rhox Faithmender)And would that mean, if Noble Purpose isn't exactly the same than lifelink, I could also have it more than once on the battlefield and would gain life for each as a single event? Sorry I made this question so big, it was just a difficult situation, since I had another Noble Purpose on my hand and was nearly dying ;)

Noble Purpose still has the old oracle text, so yes it effectively doubles up on lifelink as you'll gain life both from lifelink and then again from Noble Purpose's trigger.

It is however important to note that this is a triggered ability not actual lifelink. So for instance if someone attacks you for lethal damage, it's possible to lose the game even if your Noble Purpose triggers would put you back up into the positive.

Slycne thanks for your answer!

So that means, for example, I have 2 lifes and a Noble Purpose on the battlefield, and my opponent attacks with two 2/2 creatures. I then block one of them with a 1/1 creature (without lifelink) and let the other one pass. This creature deals 2 damage to me, which means my life goes to 0, will I therefore die before Noble Purpose triggers and I can gain life with the blocking creature?

Yes. Lifelink happens at the moment of damage, so damage is both dealt and gained simultaneously. Noble Purpose, and the other few cards still templated like it, are triggered abilities that go on the stack. What this means is that before you can gain that life from the trigger state-based actions will see that you're at zero and you'll lose right then.

Yes, you would lose before you gain the life. Noble Purpose does trigger when damage is dealt, and a triggered ability is put onto the stack the next time a player would get priority. However, state based actions (losing for 0 or less life is one of them) are checked right before each time a player would get priority. You lose before the trigger is put onto the stack.
