Interaction between Twilight Shepherd and cards that bring it back from the graveyard?

Asked by Nzero 4 years ago

Sorry if this is too basic of a question, but I've been searching and can't find the answer.

With a card like Twilight Shepherd , does its "persist" effect come before or after other cards that would bring it back? For instance, what happens if you have Gift of Immortality attached to it? Does it come back with the -1/-1 on it or is that prevented? Similarly, as another example, what happens if the Adarkar Valkyrie ability was used on it? Or what about cards that return all creatures that died during the turn, like Faith's Reward ?

Can someone tell me under what conditions the persist -1/-1 counter comes into play and when it doesn't?

In the case of T. Shep and Valkyrie if you are the active player then you control how they stack. If you target Shepard with Valkyrie the you can have that ability happen before perist does meaning you won't get the -1/-1 counter. Same with gift except if you do persist first then the gift won't come back because it wasn't what brought Shepard back. Hope that helps ya.

Thanks.

Just to be clear... you'd let the persist get on stack and then immediately use (or put as second priority) the other ability so that the other ability would process first?

Yes the stack works backwards so you would put the persist trigger first, then the Valkyrie or Gift trigger second. That way when persist goes to happen the creatures is no longer available to revive so no negative counter.

Just to be clear about one thing: deciding the order of triggers that are trying to go onto the stack at the same time depends on who the active player is and who controls the triggers. First the active player (the player whose turn it is) puts the triggers they control onto the stack in the order of their choice and then the non-active player puts their triggers onto the stack on top of those. If there are more than two players who need to make these decisions then you start with the active player and go around the table in turn order.
