Interaction between Aurelia's Fury and Battlefield Thaumaturge?

Asked by theDers 9 years ago

My opponent has 6 creatures on the battlefield. If on my first main phase i cast Aurelia's Fury while i have a Battlefield Thaumaturge in play my casting cost could be up to 6 less. If i do target all 6 creatures do i have to have the amount of mana for X in Aurelia's Fury for the initial casting? As in i am targeting all 6 creatures and the player for a total of 15 damage...1 damage to each creature and 9 to the player, do i need to have 15 mana on the board or do i only need the mana cost that Battlefield Thaumaturge bring it to, which would be 9?

  • Yes, each creature you target would reduce it's X cost by 1
  • Yes, you have to deal at least 1 damage to each creature it targets or else it's not really targeting that creature.
  • No, you don't heed to have 17 mana on the board to cast it for 15 if you're targeting 6 creatures. 11 mana will suffice(remember, the cmc is XRW not just X)

Do you happen to know what the CMC for a spell like this would be, the Aurelia's Fury . Is it the cost i pay or the cost before the reduction?

The CMC of a card is the sum of all the mana symbols in the upper-right corner. If the card is currently a spell on the stack, then X is whatever number that was chosen for it while casting the spell. In any other zone X counts as 0. Increasing or decreasing the actual amount of mana you have to pay to cast the spell doesn't change the CMC.

In your example with X=15, the CMC of the Aurelia's Fury spell is 15 + R + W = 17. The fact that you're only having to pay a total of 11 mana for it doesn't matter.
