Infinite Combo interacting with the Stack

Asked by TehGrief 6 years ago

I recently played a game in which an infinite combo went off; I was unsure how the interaction worked.

My opponent was playing the Mikaeus, the Unhallowed + Triskelion combo.

  • During my turn I cast Bubble Matrix, which would prevent the Triskelion from dealing lethal to itself.

  • In response, my opponent declares that they are going infinite with the combo of activating the ability to assign damage to a player and lethal to itself, further causing Mikaeus, the Unhallowed's ability of 'Undying' to trigger and bring it back.

I suppose I am confused as to the timing of it all... Can all of that really be done before the spell resolves?

'Undying' is a triggered ability, and Triskelion's damage ability must be put on the stack as well.

I suppose what I am trying to ask is wouldn't (after Triskelion has died) my spell resolve before the Triskelion is able to reactivate its abilities?

Yes. The triggers go onto the stack above your spell and they resolve before the spell.

Objects on the stack resolve one at a time and there is round of priority for new objects to be placed on the stack between each resolution. So they can activate Triskelion's ability three times doing two to itself and one to another target. When Triskelion dies undying triggers and resolves before anything that was already on the stack. Then Triskelion's ability can be activated in response to objects that are still on the stack and will resolve before them.
