If a player fetches while they control The Gitrog Monster, do they draw or fetch a land first?

Asked by FierceTierce 7 years ago

Question is pretty self explanatory, someone had Evolving Wilds and The Gitrog Monster, then sacrificed Evolving Wilds to pay the cost in order to fetch a land. I would think Evolving Wilds' ability would go to the stack first, then The Gitrog Monster's, meaning the player would draw first, then fetch a land. Is this correct?

You are correct.

The player activates Evolving Wilds, which includes sacrificing it in the cost. Once the ability is put on the stack, The Gitrog Monster triggers for the land entering the graveyard, putting it's ability on the stack above Evolving Wilds ability. The player will draw first.

Note that if the land entered the graveyard as part of the resolution, instead of the cost, The Gitrog Monster ability would go on the stack after the resolution of that ability.

EDIT: An example of my last paragraph would be if someone Ghost Quartered your land; because it was destroyed as part of the resolution, you would search for the basic land, then draw.
