If a creature is targeted, will giving it Hexproof do anything?

Asked by DragonChampions 4 years ago

Let's say I have a 3/3 Beast and my opponent targets it with Go for the Throat . If in response I cast Blossoming Defense , will that prevent my creature from dying?

The rules wording of Hexproof means "This permanent can't be the target of spells or abilities your opponents control." If you give your Beast hexproof in response to it being targeted, it will no longer be a legal target.

In the case of Go for the Throat specifically, the spell's only target is no longer legal and the spell will "fizzle," or simply fail to resolve and be removed from the stack, with the card sent to the graveyard. If it were a spell like Curtains' Call , where it has two targets, and the other target was still legal, then the spell would still resolve and just do as much as it could (your creature would survive due to no longer being a legal target).
