I cast a spell with Rebound. During my upkeep, can I cast an instant/ability before the rebound effect?

Asked by Tiodani 7 years ago

For example: I tap five lands to transform my Celestial Colonnade into a creature, and before attacking, I cast Artful Maneuver to buff it. On the beginning of my next upkeep, can I tap five lands to transform it before the rebound effect takes place, so I can buff it again?

Yes, that works. The part of Rebound that lets you cast the spell again is a triggered ability (starts with "when/whenever/at"). As in any other situation, you're allowed to make responses to the trigger before it starts resolving (the spell gets cast as part of the resolution).

you may do so before the ability that lets you recast it resolves.

from the gatherer page:
- At the beginning of your upkeep, all delayed triggered abilities created by rebound effects trigger. You may handle them in any order. If you want to cast a card this way, you do so as part of the resolution of its delayed triggered ability. Timing restrictions based on the cards type (if its a sorcery) are ignored. Other restrictions, such as Cast [this spell] only during combat, must be followed.

ah, so I suppose it would behave this way:

1) The upkeep begins, and Artful Manuever is cast, targeting the Celestial Collonade (normally this would make the spell fizzle)

2) In response, I tap five lands to put the transformation on the stack.

3) Since it's on the top, the transformation resolves first, making the Collonade a valid target.

4) The Artful Manuever resolves normally, buffing the Collonade, now a creature.

Not quite. When you cast Artful Maneuver, it must have a legal target. Doing what you described can't be done because when you cast AM, CC isn't a creature and therefore not a legal target.

In order for this to happen correctly, you must turn Celestial Colonnade into a creature before the rebound trigger resolves.

The steps end up being:

1) The upkeep begins, Artful Maneuver's rebound ability triggers.

2) In response, you tap five lands to activate Celestial Colonnade's animation ability.

3) Because it's on top, the animation ability resolves first, making the Colonnade a valid target.

4) Manuever's rebound ability resolves, and you cast it choosing Colonnade as the target.

5) Manuever resolves, buffing the Colonnade which was a valid target both at the time of casting and on resolution.

The distinction is important, because if instead you had a Citadel Siege with khan's chosen you would never be able to choose Colonnade as it's target.

Why can you not target Colonnade with Citadel Siege?

I assume because he misread it and thinks it is an upkeep trigger. Now you would never be able to animate Colonnade to save a another creature from The Abyss, but it works fine with combat triggers like Citadel Siege.

He is entirely correct about me being wrong, but yes, my point works with The Abyss, if you have to choose a target at the beginning of your upkeep, you can't activate abilities to make things targetable. Rebound is an exception, because it triggers, then you cast a targeting spell on resolution.
