Hurkly's Recall EOT against Inkmoth Nexus

Asked by ducttapedeckbox 8 years ago

I'm holding Hurkyl's Recall. My opponent has two animated Inkmoth Nexuss. Can I Recall at the end of my opponent's turn to bounce the two Nexus's, or do they just lose animation before I can respond to it?

EOT effects wear off at the cleanup step, which is the final step in the turn. Except for very specific corner cases, nothing gives players priority during the cleanup step. So if you cast Hurkyl's Recall at the beginning of the end step, you'll hit any animated Nexuses.

The loss of being an artifact does not use the stack so you can't respond to them changing back. You can still cast Hurkyl's Recall in the end step but it wont effect the lands.

If the land said "At the beginning of the next end step, [name] stops being an artifact" then you could respond and return it before it changes back.

You can also just cast the Recall at the end of Post-combat Main. Ask them to announce when they are leaving their post-combat main phase. Once they give you the go-ahead you can cast the recall and then the lands will be bounced.

Awesome, thank you, Epoch!

EDIT: and Cola!

@ Epochalyptik I believe you are incorrect. The wording "until end of turn" refers to "the beginning of the next end step", not the cleanup step. The Nexus will stop being an artifact as soon as the game progresses to the "End Step".

First Paragraph - The end step, often referred to as the "end of turn" and previously known as the "end of turn step", is the first step of the ending phase. It is usually the last opportunity for a player to perform any action before the next player's turn starts
"Referred to as "end of turn"" is the important part.

"Until end of turn" and "beginning of the next end step" are entirely different things and are therefore not synonymous.

512.1. The ending phase consists of two steps: end and cleanup.

514. Cleanup Step

514.2. Second, the following actions happen simultaneously: all damage marked on permanents (including phased-out permanents) is removed and all "until end of turn" and "this turn" effects end. This turn-based action doesn't use the stack.

Yeah I got it, I was caught up on the fact that the end step is being referred to as "end of turn" and the ability says until "end of turn".
514.2 has cleared that up.
