How would deathtouch and infect interact on the same creature?

Asked by Nuubi 4 years ago

So, say I have a creature with deathtouch, something like Hired Poisoner and I play an artifact that gives infect or Triumph of the Hordes . Would deathtouch be cancelled out because of infect or are the -1/-1 counters still considered damage on a creature and it would kill the other creature no matter what because damage was dealt?

From the rulings on Infect:

  • Damage from a source with infect is damage in all respects. If the source with infect also has lifelink, damage dealt by that source also causes its controller to gain that much life. Damage from a source with infect can be prevented or redirected. Abilities that trigger on damage being dealt will trigger if a source with infect deals damage, if appropriate.

And from the rules on Deathtouch:

  • 702.2b A creature with toughness greater than 0 that’s been dealt damage by a source with deathtouch since the last time state-based actions were checked is destroyed as a state-based action. See rule 704.

A creature with infect deals damage to creatures in the form of -1/-1 counters, but it is still dealing damage. Therefore it is enough to destroy a creature (barring indestructible, regeneration, etc.).
