How to stop Life and Limb endless tokens?

Asked by themanofhat 9 years ago

So when i play Life and Limb and Sporemound to just keep creating tokens because it is a loop it will, of course, cause the game to end in a draw. My question is to prevent this from happening can i just kill the Sporemound with an instant kill spell or can i sacrifice it with an activated ability such as Stronghold Assassin? I still don't understand the order that spells and abilities resolve.

The basic idea is that all objects on the stack have equal weight. The stack resolves from the topmost object down to the bottommost object (there's a break in between each resolution for new responses; the stack doesn't resolve all at once). No one kind of spell or ability (excluding mana abilities like those found on lands and on Llanowar Elves, etc.) will always resolve before another.

Sporemound has a triggered ability that triggers whenever a land enters the battlefield. You can respond to this ability because it uses the stack. If you destroy Sporemound (or otherwise remove it from the battlefield), then its ability will still resolve, but it won't retrigger for the new land creature.

Stronghold Assassin won't do anything for you if you're using it on the token. Once a land creature enters the battlefield in this situation, Sporemound's ability will trigger. You can't kill the creature before it's on the battlefield, and killing it after it enters won't do anything about the Sporemound ability that's still on the stack.

If you sacrifice Sporemound to Stronghold Assassin's ability, you'll cut the combo as described two paragraphs above.
