How to handle each player controlling a Liliana, Defiant Necromancer  Flip emblem?

Asked by veritates1 8 years ago

I was playing a weird kitchen table game of magic both parties ended up controlling an emblem for Liliana, Defiant Necromancer  Flip. We were at a loss for what to do when a non-token creature died. I think it has to do with whose turn it is, but I'm not confident in that...any advice?

Thanks in advance!

please mentally add an "and" in that first sentence. AND both parties ended up controlling an emblem.

My emblem states "Player auto-corrects grammar in his head, but not in the real world. Enjoy the internet."

Short answer: The one whose turn it is not will end up with the creature.

Slightly longer answer: Lili's emblem sets up a DTA (or delayed trigger ability) that triggers at the beginning of the end step. When that time comes both emblems trigger and want to be put on the stack. The uses AP-NAP order (active player - non-active player) to determine how to put triggers on the stack when they are controlled by a different player (when multiple triggers are controlled by the same player, that player decides the order in which to put the triggers on the stack).

The non-active player (the player whose turn it is not) will have his trigger placed on top of the trigger of the active player. Now, when both of you pass priority (aka do nothing) the topmost object on the stack resolves and returns the creature.

When both of you pass priority again, the other Lily trigger resolves, fails to find the creature in the graveyard and does nothing.
