How the Polymorphist's Jest works ?

Asked by hrbj 9 years ago

I have a question regarding to Polymorphist's Jest .

For example,my opponent has got Fabled Hero with 5 counters on it, in addition this creature is enchanted with Hopeful Eidolon and Sunbond

So i played Polymorphist's Jest and changed Fabled Hero to frog. Does this creature lose also counters, lifelink and other abilities from Hopeful Eidolon and Sunbond ?

It loses all abilities, but counters won't be removed unless a card changes zones or an effect specifically says so. Additionally, the bonus from counters are applied after setting the base power and toughness of a creature.

All abilities in this case includes Double Strike, Lifelink and the +1/+1 from Hopeful Eidolon , the ability to gain counters from Sunbond .

In the end, your opponent will have a 6/6 blue Frog creature.

It will not lose counters as the only thing that can remove counters is an ability that specifically says so or a zone change. It will not have any abilities from Hopeful Eidolon or Sunbond but it will get the p/t buff from the Eidolon. These effect apply in layer 6 and 7. In layer 6 the Fabled Hero gains abilities from the eidolon and Sunbond then loese them due to Polymorphist's Jest this is because abilities would be applied in time stamp order. In layer 7 p/t setting effects are in a earlier sublayer than bonuses so it will become a 1/1 then get +5/+5 from the counters an +1/+1 from the Eidolon.

TL;DR: It get all of the p/t boosts but no abilities from Hopeful Eidolon and Sunbond

lordoftheshadows: Note that the +1/+1 the Eidolon grants is also an ability and therefore will be overwritten.

BlueScope Incorrect. The +1/+1 from Hopeful Eidolon is a static buff that the enchantment grants to the enchanted creature. That's why it's written how it is written. The creature gets +1/+1 from the Eidolon but the creature has lifelink. The lifelink is removed because it's on the target creature but the Eidolon doesn't care what it is enchanting and grants the +1/+1 regardless.

and what about for exmaple Spear of Heliod frog has got additional +1/+1 if opponent has got Spear of Heliod on the battlefield ?

Polymorphist's Jest doesn't change the effect of Spear of Heliod , an aura like a bestowed Hopeful Eidolon or Hammerhand , a spell like Become Immense or Throttle , or any other +/- effect. Like it says, it only changes the base power and toughness.

Ok, heres how all this stuff works:

Layer 4: Fabled Hero becomes a Frog and loses all other creature types.
Layer 5: Fabled Hero becomes blue and loses all other colors.
Layer 6: First we apply the lifelink from Eidolon and the triggered ability from Sunbond in timestamp order, then we remove all abilities (double strike, heroic, lifelink, the sunbound trigger) due to Jest (last timestamp).
Layer 7a: Fabled Hero is a 1/1.
Layer 7b: Fabled Hero's base power and toughness are set to 1/1.
Layer 7c: Fabled Hero gets +1/+1 from Eidolon.
Layer 7d: Fabled Hero gets +5/+5 from the counters on it.

End result: Fabled Hero is a 7/7 blue Frog with no abilities.
