How much life does Trostani, Selesnya's Voice gives with Honor of the Pure in play?

Asked by Dergam 7 years ago

I have Trostani, Selesnya's Voice and Honor of the Pure in play, and a 1/1 creature gets into play under my control. Do I get 1 life or 2 of life? What's the logical explanation behind it?

You would get 2 life.

Honor of the Pure has a static ability that modifiers the P/T of your creatures. This starts to apply as soon as a creature would go to enter the battlefield and ends as soon as a creature leaves the battlefield. So, your 1/1 would enter as a 2/2 and you would gain 2 life.

Thanks. It's kind like the "you choose which triggers first", Trostani's ability or the +1/+1 static ability? Or by default you would get 2 life

There's no choice. The creature enters as a 2/2, because the +1/+1 is always applying. If you had Honor of the Pure and Mentor of the Meek on the battlefield and played a 2/2 white creature, Mentor of the Meek would not trigger at all because the creature enters as a 3/3. Also, to answer the initial question more accurately, if the 1/1 creature you play is white, you gain 2 life, otherwise you only gain 1 life, as Honor of the Pure only increases the toughness of white creatures.

Note also Trostani's ability only checks the creature's toughness when the ability resolves. You can respond to the ability and further modify the creature's toughness before the ability resolves in order to change how much life you would gain.
