How Many Times Will Riku, Ral, and Twinning Staff Copy a Spell?

Asked by DemonDragonJ 3 years ago

With the recent revelation of Twinning Staff from the upcoming Commander 2020, I wish to ask how that card shall interact with other effects that copy spells.

Specifically, if a player controls the staff, Riku of Two Reflections, and Ral, Storm Conduit, how many times can they copy a single instant or sorcery spell?

My guess is that a spell can be copied up to six times: once each from the staff, Riku, and Ral, and then the staff will cause the spell to be copied an additional time for each initial time that it was copied.

What does everyone else say about this subject? How many times will those three cards copy a spell?

The Twinning Staff will give you an extra copy for each separate instance where you copy a spell. So you could get 6 with that setup, yeah.

Important note with effects that make multiple copies at the same time, such as Storm or Zada, Hedron Grinder: Twinning Staff produces an extra copy per copy effect. So while you'll get 2 copies from Riku, you still only get a single additional copy from Storm and such.

In other words, if the storm count is 5 when you cast Grapeshot, you'll get 6 copies if you control a Twinning Staff.
