How exactly does Brand work?

Asked by Aethaleon 8 years ago

There's a card called Brand and the oracle text has (This effect lasts indefinitely). Does this mean that I can cast it turn 1 and then if someone plays Insurrection later on, they can't gain control of my creatures? Or do I have to cast it after something like Insurrection resolves and it only effects things that are on my field at the time?

You have to cast it after any other control spell or ability.

The reminder text is just there to remind you that the control of the permanents is not just until the end of turn.

Cards you own are the cards in your deck with which you start the game.

Normally, permanents you control enter the battlefield under your control. If you ever lose control of them, say with Control Magic, you can use Brand to bring them back to your control.

The thing with control-changing effects is that they work via timestamps - the latest to apply is the only that matters, applying on top of any other.

In the case of insurrection, when an opponent gains control of your creatures, you can use brand to bring them back to you and effectively negate their Insurrection (for your permanents).

Final note, This effect lasts indefinitely just means that the effect lasts until it is overriden by another such effect, unlike Insurrection, which lasts until end of turn.
