How does willbreaker and Gwafa hazid interact?

Asked by Mindgrind 8 years ago

How would those two interact if I had both in play, and bribed a creature? My gut instinct says my opponent would draw a card and I would gain control of their creature, but I'm not sure.Willbreaker Gwafa Hazid, Profiteer

Gwafa Hazid, Profiteer's ability triggers Willbreaker's; that means Willbreaker's goes on the stack after the Profiteer's. The Willbreaker ability will resolve first, changing control to Willbreaker's controller.

Because the Profiteer's ability refers to "its controller" (for the target creature) he is using an indirect reference to "the current controller of the creature" which is Willbreaker's controller now. His ability will resolve, drawing the controller of Willbreaker a card.

This is really a PRO CON combination honestly so let me try to break it down as best as I can

Willbreaker's rule texts states "target" so as soon as a spell or ability 'targets' something it triggers Willbreaker's ability so you will gain control of the creature. Now pairing Willbreaker with Gwafa Hazid, Profiteer can become problematic. As you'll be able to gain control of target creature and get to draw a card but the bribery counter will stay on the target creature so therefore it won't be able to attack or block.

Best suggestion is to use them for any ability that requires creature sacrifice unless you can use a card that would remove the bribery counter

These are both incorrect. Gwafa Hazid, Profiteer's ability says it can only target a creature "you don't control."

Willbreaker's triggered ability goes on the stack above Gwafa's ability and resolves first, making you the controller of the targeted creature.

When Gwafa's ability goes to resolve, its target is no longer legal because you control the creature. His ability fizzles and is removed from the stack. You do not draw a card.

Oops, I missed that limitation on the Profiteer. You are right.
