How does the X mana cost work with Disrupting Shoal
Asked by Bobby654 9 years ago
I know that X means that what ever amount of mana tapped = the power of the card with X in it's mana cost. But When it comes to Disrupting Shoal what would X be if say you removed Reshape in order to pay it's x cost
Ah ok. It just got confused with it's other effect to pay the cost for x

Also, to add to that, in any zone except the stack, the value of X in converted mana costs is 0, since you have no way to set it. Thus, in your example, if you pitch a Reshape to Shoal, you will counter a spell with 2 CMC.

Not quite. As you are casting the spell you assign a value for X. Then when it comes time to pay the cost of X, you normally tap lands to add mana equal to the value of X and pay the cost. Disrupting Shoal lets you still assign a value for X, but instead of paying mana you can exile a blue card that has a CMC equal to the value of X.
