How does Spy Kit work??

Asked by Tortuous_TG18 7 years ago

I am unsure of the new card Spy Kit and how it works. Could someone enlighten me with the knowledge to make the determination whether this card is good or not?

I'm only going to address the ramifications of the 'all names' part of the ability, since the rest is the same as any other equipment.

Also, let X = the number of non-legendary creature card names in MtG

Once attached to a creature, that creature has the name of all non-legendary creature cards. This means that whenever a spell or ability references the name of the equipped creature, it receives X values. For example, if you cast Maelstrom Pulse on a White Knight equipped with Spy Kit, you will destroy all non-legendary creatures. This is because when Pulse compares the name of its target to all other nonland permanents, it compares them to all X values, because it is targeting a creature with X names.

As to whether Spy Kit is good, look into cards that reference the name of a creature, such as Conspiracies, Biovisionary or Cylian Sunsinger.

If I left something out or you are still unsure of something, feel free to ask more questions.

The equipped creature gets +1/+1 and has the name of every non-legendary creature in addition to it's own name.

This is useful in conspiracy drafts where you have conspiracies that do stuff based on a creature's name such as Adriana's Valor. Not so useful in any other format where extra copies of the named cards for Bubbling Cauldron/Bogbrew Witch/Festering Newt is about the most useful thing to do with it.

hmm apparently the new conspiracies don't work for linking that great Muzzio's Preparations for an example of an old conspiracy and why it makes sense to print Spy Kit in this set.
