How does Sigil of Sleep work with protection from blue/protection from creatures/etc.

Asked by Clintone 4 years ago

Let's say I have a Prodigal Sorcerer and a Fireslinger that have both been enchanted with Sigil of Sleep.

My opponent has a creature with protection from red, a creature with protection from blue, a creature with protection from creatures, and a creature with the Shroud ability.

Would either the Prodigal Sorcerer or the Fireslinger be able to return any of my opponent's creatures to her/his hand via damaging my opponent? If so, which ones would the Fireslinger be able to return to my opponent's hand, and which ones would the Prodigal Sorcerer be able to return to my opponent's hand?

Note that Sigil of Sleep is a blue card, Fireslinger is a red card, and Prodigal Sorcerer is a blue card.

Sigil of Sleep, unlike say Firebreathing does not confer its ability on the enchanted creature. So, the source of the ability will always be blue.

You will not be able to return to hand the creature with protection with blue or the one with shroud, but can return the protection from red and protection from creatures ones.

Note, if you use Fireslinger with Sigil, you will also have to return one of your creatures.

The bounce ability of Sigil of Sleep comes from the Sigil itself, not the creature (note that the Sigil does not say "Enchanted creature gains '[this ability]'"). Therefore it doesn't matter what color creature it's enchanting since the damage must be done to the player, not the creature (unless, of course, the player has protection from a color).

The creature with protection from red can be bounced, since the source of the ability (the Sigil) is blue. The creature with protection from creatures can also be bounced, since the source of the ability is not a creature.

The other two creatures can't be bounced. Protection from blue and shroud both block targeting from the ability, regardless of what creature is enchanted with Sigil of Sleep.

Thanks a third time. I didn't think of the Fireslinger result, but that's useful to know.
