How does Savage Ventmaw effect work?

Asked by nismonate81 8 years ago

Does it mean it can pay basically any card's converted mana cost of 6 six or less as long the card requires at least some red or green mana? What about a card with an all colorless mana cost of 6?

Savage Ventmaw does nothing more than add to your mana pool whenever it attacks. That's equal to tapping three Forests and 3 Mountains for mana. Just like with other colored mana, you can use it to cast Alloy Golem or other cards with colorless mana.

"That's equal to" should say "that produces the same amount and types of mana as"

But that mana pool doesn't run out as phases continue until end of turn, so I can place as much creatures I want in my second main phase, or instants or sorcery, etc, but anything above what 3 forests and 3 mountains, I have to pay mana and does run out. And what if I had two Savage Ventmaw attacks? Double effect?

The mana is no different from mana produced by any other effect, except it stays in your pool until spent or until the end of the turn. If you spend it, it's gone. It gets drained from your pool. You don't get to reuse that mana ad nauseam.

Epochalyptik while I don't disbelief your answer wouldn't it make it more sense for Savage Ventmaw 's effect to read like this : Whenever Savage Ventmaw attacks during your combat phase add ForestForestForestMountainMountainMountain to your mana pool until end of turn? The way they have it now is confusing especially if you are correct. Can more people confirm his answer?

The way Savage Ventmaw is currently written is the best way to make its effect work within the rules of the game.

Lands and mana aren't the same thing. Mana is the resource you use to pay for spells and abilities, and lands are the most common sources of mana. It's possible to get mana from other sources (Elvish Mystic, Pyretic Ritual, etc.) and there are even some weird old lands that don't make mana at all (Maze of Ith, Unholy Citadel, etc.).

When you tap a Forest for mana, you're activating an ability that says ": Add to your mana pool". This mana stays in your pool until either the current step/phase ends or you use it to pay a cost. The mana made by Savage Ventmaw won't auto-empty at the end of a step/phase until the end of the current turn, but it will leave the pool if you spend it on a spell or ability.
