How does Press the Advantage work with Precursor Golem?

Asked by TheMountainLion 7 years ago

Do I only get to buff two creatures once or do I get to buff them all twice?

Depends.

First off, the same target cant be chosen multiple times for any one instance of the word target on a spell or ability. So, you must target two different creatures with Press the Advantage.

If you target only one golem creature with it (you can choose to target 0-2 creatures due to Press the Advantage saying "up to two"), Precursor Golem will trigger.

Tl;dr - at best, you can give you golems +2/+2 and trample with this card.

@Boza: More accurately, at best, you can give all Golems (not just your own, for that matter) and a single non-Golem creature +2/+2 and trample.

@BlueScope, actually that's not true. There's an Oracle clarification for this card to this effect (emphasis added):

1/1/2011 The second ability triggers whenever a player casts an instant or sorcery spell that targets only one Golem and no other object or player. That Golem can be Precursor Golem itself, one of the Golem tokens it created, or any other Golem. It doesnt matter who controls the Golem.

@nobu_the_bard: Ah, interesting... I did read that wrong, and that was a Ruling I wasn't aware of - thanks for the highlight!
