How does populate work?

Asked by Djmikewhite 7 years ago

Example: Hydra Broodmaster became monstrous and summoned 9 Hydra tokens. Next turn Growing Ranks populated the Hydra. Does it populate just a single Hydra token? Or does it populate for all 9 tokens? End result, either 10 Hydras or 18 Hydras?

In the reminder text, it does specify that you put a token onto the battlefield that's a copy of "a" creature token you control so you would have 10 tokens, not 18.

It does not double the number of tokens you have. Populate cards only copy a singular token which you choose.

For an effect that doubles, see Doubling Season, Rhys the Redeemed, or Second Harvest.

Just a technical comment since I saw this come up in the wording of your question: You don't populate Hydra Broodmaster. Populate only affects tokens. You choose one token from among the tokens you control and create a copy of it. For clarity, if you were to use the phrase "I populate ___," the blank would be the token you're populating, not the card that created it.
