How does melek, Mizzix mastery, and eye of the storm interact?

Asked by theburbsman 7 years ago

So I'm trying to build a fun janky melek deck and I'm wondering what would happen with eye of the storm out if I was to cast Mizzix mastery from the top of my deck for its alternative cost. So the way I see it happens is I get a casting of Mizzix mastery overloaded that gets exiled with eye of the storm then I get a copy from melek that will resolve, finally I get a copy from eye of the storm without overload. The thing I have no clue on is what happens with the spells exiled from melek's copy do they interact with eye of the storm or not? Any help on this would be appreciated, I know it isn't the most likely scenario but it is only a two card combo that could happen.

You can use double square brackets around a card's name to link it. It's the easiest way to make sure everyone reading your question understands what's going on. This is even more important for your question since it involves three especially unusual and complicated cards: Melek, Izzet Paragon, Eye of the Storm, Mizzix's Mastery

You're right on what happens with Mizzix's Mastery. The copy created by Melek, Izzet Paragon still has Overload, but the copy created by Eye of the Storm doesn't.

Eye of the Storm doesn't have any interaction with the copies of spells cast by Mizzix's Mastery. Notice that Eye of the Storm triggers "whenever a player casts an instant or sorcery card", and a copy of a spell isn't a card. This is why, for example, the Eye's own ability doesn't keep re-triggering itself over and over again.

Remember to link all cards relevant to your question: Melek, Izzet Paragon, Mizzix's Mastery, Eye of the Storm. Good formatting is also helpful...

Getting some basics out of the way:

  • Eye of the Storm only triggers for spells that are cards, not for copies of spells
  • only cards exiled with Eye of the Storm's ability will be copied with its ability
  • copies of overloaded cards won't be overloaded

So, assuming you don't have any cards exiled with Eye of the Storm yet, when you overload Mastery from the top of your library, Melek and Eye of the Storm trigger. You control both triggers, so you get to choose in which order they're put on the stack.

If you order them for Melek to resolve first, you will copy the Mastery. You get to choose an instant/sorcery from your graveyard as a target, then it will be put on top of the stack and resolve first, exiling a card from your graveyard, cast the copy, which will then resolve. Then, the original Mizzix Mastery will resolve, exile and copy all spells from your graveyard, then exile itself. When Eye's trigger finally resolves, it does nothing, as the spell (Mastery) left the stack already.

If Eye should resolve first, it will exile the Mastery and have you cast a copy of it. From here on out, it's pretty much the same deal as with Melek resolving first, except that there's an additional card "imprinted" on Eye of the Storm that will get cast by any player casting a spell from here on out.

Thank you for the help both in formatting for the website and the rulings. I'm glad I was correct in my understanding of the rules interactions between those cards, they get convoluted sometimes.
