How does Majestic Myriarch actually work?

While playing Majestic Myriarch a guy i was playing said it only gets the power and toughness for cards on the field at the time it is played and doesn't go up as you add creature cards on the field every turn. Is this a true statement or was he trying to just not lose the game. Example: I had 6 creatures not counting the Majestic Myriarch out and dropped 2 the next turn, i called a 16/16 and he said no it was a 12/12 still.

Majestic Myriarch's power and toughness are each equal to twice the number of creatures you control. This is true no matter what zone Majestic Myriarch is in and automatically adjusts as the number of creatures changes. As you controlled Majestic Myriarch and 8 other creatures it was an 18/18.
