How does Kaho, Minamo Historian work with split/fuse cards?

Asked by F0rce0fWill 8 years ago

In this case Far / Away. I know that Elite Arcanist has to pay to cast either. Does Kaho, Minamo Historian work the same way?

The rulings against 'far//away' over on gatherer say that;

"If you're casting a split card with fuse from any zone other than your hand, you can't cast both halves. You'll only be able to cast one half or the other"

As Kaho removes the card from the game, they're not in your hand, and as such you presumably can't cast both halves.

Not a judge though, so pinch of salt and all that.

I've been pointed towards the correct section in the rule book.

702.101a

Fuse is a static ability found on some split cards (see rule 708, "Split Cards") that applies while the card with fuse is in a player's hand. If a player casts a split card with fuse from his or her hand, the player may choose to cast both halves of that split card. This choice is made before putting the split card with fuse onto the stack. The resulting spell is a fused split spell.

To expound a bit on the differences between Kaho, Minamo Historian and Elite Arcanist:

Kaho is designed to have multiple things exiled with its first ability. As such it says " ...a card with converted mana cost X... " instead of " ...the exiled card... ". This means that the relevant rule is going to be 708.2 instead of 607.3

708.2. In every zone except the stack, split cards have two sets of characteristics and two converted mana costs.

607.3. If, within a pair of linked abilities, one ability refers to a single object as "the exiled card," "a card exiled with [this card]," or a similar phrase, and the other ability has exiled multiple cards (usually because it was copied), the ability refers to each of the exiled cards. If that ability asks for any information about the exiled card, such as a characteristic or converted mana cost, it gets multiple answers. If these answers are used to determine the value of a variable, the sum of the answers is used. If that ability performs any actions on the exiled card, it performs that action on each exiled card.

No, it is 2 or 3. There are 2 cmcs when split cards are in any zone other than the stack.

I'm at work and so can't spend too long looking at magic stuff but if someone with more time could check, or I will in approximately 8 hours, you may be able to pay 2 and cast either half but there is no way to cast both.

It took me a little while to get my head around it, but the reason Kaho, Minamo Historian and Elite Arcanist work differently here hinges on the sentence in the previously quoted 607.3 that says "If these answers are used to determine the value of a variable, the sum of the answers is used."

Arcanist's ability determines the value of X based on the characteristics of the exiled card(s). Kaho's ability, however, lets you determine X yourself and then choose an appropriate card to cast as the ability resolves. Because Far / Away's CMC is "2 and 3", you can pay and then cast either half of the card when you put it on the stack (similar to the interaction with Isochron Scepter).

Ah thank you Rhadamanthus and Gidgetimer, I see the difference between the two now. Great, then I have a cheap way to get her back into my hand for my Dralnu, Lich Lord deck!
