How does instant speed double strike interact with an attacking first striker?

Asked by Tyrant-Thanatos 6 years ago

So I'm pretty sure I understand how this works, but I'd like if someone could confirm this.

If I attack with a creature with first strike, say a White Knight, and then during the combat damage step, after damage has been dealt, I grant my knight double strike, say with Double Cleave, does this enable it to hit again during the damage step that creatures without first strike hit during?

I'm mostly curious because a couple of C17 spoilers, Balan and the self-cloning axe, could make this sort of thing a fairly common occurrence in my playgroup.

510.5. If at least one attacking or blocking creature has first strike (see rule 702.7) or double strike (see rule 702.4) as the combat damage step begins, the only creatures that assign combat damage in that step are those with first strike or double strike. After that step, instead of proceeding to the end of combat step, the phase gets a second combat damage step. The only creatures that assign combat damage in that step are the remaining attackers and blockers that had neither first strike nor double strike as the first combat damage step began,as well as the remaining attackers and blockers that currently have double strike. After that step, the phase proceeds to the end of combat step.

According to the last part of this rule it works.

I had found that rule when I was trying to research this myself, but I was having difficulty figuring out exactly what it meant. Rereading it has helped clarify, the crucial bit being "as well as the remaining attackers and blockers that currently have double strike" so as long as they're granted double strike before the "regular" combat damage step, they should hit during it.

Thanks!
