How does Hardened Scales Affects Champion of the Parish?

Asked by PrismMTG 6 years ago

If I have a Champion of the Parish and a Hardened Scales on the battlefield and I play a Thalia's Lieutenant, how many counters would I put on my Champion of the Parish? I'm think 4 because Hardened Scales would trigger for both Champion of the Parish's and Thalia's Lieutenant's abilities.

Hardened Scales never triggers, its ability is a static ability and a replacement effect. Both Champion of the Parish and Thalia's Lieutenant will trigger to each give Champion of the Parish one +1/+1 counter, and both abilities will be replaced with giving Champion of the Parish two +1/+1 counters, for a total of four +1/+1 counters once both have resolved.

TL;DR - You are correct on the overall outcome, but have some terminology wrong (which isn't too big a deal).
