How does Ethersworn Canonist interact with Genesis Hydra?

Asked by Chasespartan 9 years ago

I play Ethersworn Canonist. next turn my opponent plays Genesis Hydra pumping five into X to get a Prophet of Kruphix out. I argue he can't because of Ethersworn's ability, he argues back stating that since it's through a creature ability he's able to play it.

I'm not exactly sure how that works, I've tried to look for examples online and rulings but couldn't find any, so am I right or is my opponent?

Ethersworn Canonist prevents players from casting additional nonartifact spells. Your opponent cast Genesis Hydra, but Genesis Hydra's ability doesn't cause your opponent to cast anything else. Remember, putting something onto the battlefield and casting something are two completely different game actions.

Prophet of Kruphix can be put onto the battlefield.

Your opponent is correct. Ethersworn Canonist means that only one spell can be cast per turn but Genesis Hydra doesn't cast the card it just puts it directly onto the battlefield from your library. Cards are only cast if something says "play" or "cast"; "put" means it goes directly to the battlefield.
