How does Doubling Chant work with cascade?

Asked by vic 9 years ago

Doubling Chant says I shuffle after my creatures hit the board. So if I have a Bloodbraid Elf in play and I cast Doubling Chant can I stack my deck while searching for creatures, setting myself up for an optimal cascade with my new Bloodbraid?

No, you can't do that. Bloodbraid Elf 's cascade will not even trigger in this case as it is not cast, but rather put onto the battlefield by Doubling Season . Another problem here is that, assuming you had a creature with an ETB ability put onto the battlefield by Doubling Season , the ability would trigger during the resolution of Doubling Season but it wouldn't be put onto the stack until after Doubling Season had finished resolving, meaning that your library would be shuffled before the ability even hits the stack.

Beyond that, any "stacking" of your deck is cheating. Unless it is specified that you may know the order or location of certain cards within your library, your library is to be random.

Shuffling is a means of randomization, and your opponent is entitled (and in higher REL events, obligated) to cut your deck after a shuffle.

At higher REL they are required to actually shuffle, not just cut. The last paragraph of 3.9 in the tournament rules states:

At Competitive and Professional REL tournaments, players are required to shuffle their opponents decks after their owners have shuffled them. The Head Judge can require this at Regular REL tournaments as well.
