How does Archmage Ascension and Sylvan Library interaction work out?

Asked by Luken 9 years ago

Archmage Ascension's second ability lets me tutor instead of draw and Sylvan Library Would let me tutor for 2 more cards correct?

If so the do the cards i tutored for using Library make me have to Pay 8 life or put them on the top or do i get to keep the two cards I just tutored for with out having to pay?

Sylvan Library has a triggered ability that triggers at the beginning of your draw step and allows you to create two more "draw a card" events.

Archmage Ascension has a replacement effect which replaces the event "Draw a Card" with the event "Search your library for a card, and put it into your hand"

You have the option of replacing all three of those events with "Search your library for a card and put it into your hand" in which case you will not need to pay any life, because Sylvan Library only cares about "cards drawn this turn"

You can usually find answers to questions like these on Gatherer:

16/09/2007 If you choose to draw two cards, then replace one or more of those draws with some other effect, the rest of Sylvan Library's ability still happens. If you've actually drawn only one card that turn, you must choose that card and either pay 4 life or put it on top of your library. If you haven't actually drawn any cards that turn, the rest of the ability has no effect.
