How do I count...counter multipliers?

Asked by goldlion 6 years ago

When multiplying counter additions to a creature with both Corpsejack Menace and Hardened Scales on the battlefield, whos abilities gets added first? My initial thought with my limited knowledge of mechanics says whoever came onto the battlefield first. My second thought is Hardened Scales who adds one more for each amount, then Corpsejack Menace who doubles it but that might be more of a subject wishing of mine :) (resulting in +4/+4 rather than +3/+3.

also,Gilder Bairns ability says For each counter on target creature, put another of those counters- With this wording it sounds like its a one at a time sort of thing Im guessing thats not the case though, that they are all applied at once, so each counter isnt added on to by something like the Winding Constrictor or Hardened Scales. Or thatd mean some crazy counter tripling. Correct?

As they're both replacement effects, you choose which happens first. The smart choice would be to have Hardened Scales add 1, then Corpsejack Menace double that amount. As for Gilder Bairn, you are correct, all of the counters are applied at once, so Hardened Scales will only add 1 counter at the very end.
