How do "As ~ enters the battlefield" and cast triggers interact?

Asked by DubbaDub 6 years ago

I was playing an EDH game yesterday with Edgar Markov as my commander. Then when I played metallic mimic, there was a lot of confusion if i get a vampire token or not. In short, do cast triggers occur before "As enter the battlefield" abilities or after?

Before. Cast triggers resolve before the spell that triggered them.

To be more specific:

A mimic is cast and goes on the stack. Edgar checks to see if it is a vampire. It's not. Eminence doesn't trigger. Considering no responses, the mimic resolves. It's ETB trigger goes on the stack. This is the point where a Victim of Night can resolve and kill it. When the ETB trigger resolves, Victim of Night sees the mimic as a vampire, and it's an illegal target. If you choose vampire, that is.

Link your cards please: Edgar Markov, Metallic Mimic

And like pskinn01 said, cast triggers are created and resolve while the spell that triggered them is on the stack.

Metallic Mimic won't even trigger Edgar Markov because it is a shapeshifter spell on the stack. You will not get a vampire.

Spirit_Logan, Metallic Mimic doesn't have an ETB trigger, so what you described doesn't work.

Abilities phrased "As ~ enters the battlefield" are replacement effects that modify how a permanent enters the battlefield. They happen immediately.

There is never a time when Metallic Mimic is on the battlefield without a choice being made, so there is never a time when Victim of Night can target it.

Similarly, there is never a time when Clone is a 0/0 and not the copied creature. If Clone had an ETB trigger, it would die as a state-based action before that trigger could be put on the stack.
