Hive Mind+Pact of Negation

Asked by seuvius 9 years ago

Ok this has been bothering me for a while and I feel stupid for this as I am sure I am over thinking it,but how can you use pact of negation as a win con with hive mind? Whenever you target a spell with pact of negation and hive mind is on the field your opponent copies it and can,and more than likely will, counter your pact of negation which causes them to both fizzle and no one has to pay the upkeep cost right?

In order for any of the rules text in the card to matter, it has to resolve first. So if they counter your Pact, then sure, your Pact wont resolve and you won't have to pay the upkeep cost.

But in order for them to have countered your Pact, their Pact had to resolve for that to happen. And because it did, they will have to pay the upkeep cost.

So it doesn't matter what they do to your Pact, because it is isn't your Pact that is causing the Pacts to appear on their stack. It is the Hivemind's ability.

So in order for them to avoid the upkeep cost, they have basically two ways. They would have to get rid their own copy of the pact on the stack, without it resolving (by countering it with another spell, for example). Or they could somehow counter Hivemind's ability while it is on the stack, so that the copies never emerge in the first place.

For example's sake: Nivmagus Elemental, Mindbreak Trap (the copies weren't cast), or Stifle.

If your opponent's Pact of Negation countered yours then your opponent's spell definitely didn't fizzle. It resolved completely, so at the beginning of their next upkeep they have to either pay the cost or lose.
