Hero's Blade question

if Hero's Blade is on the battlefield unequipped to a creature, and I cast any legendary creature, say Polukranos, World Eater, do I have to pay the 4 colorless mana to attach it or does the text allow me to attach it without paying the 4 colorless mana?

equip is an ability that allows you to attach an equipment to a creature for the specified cost, some equipment also have other effects that can attach them to creatures when certain conditions or alternate costs are met, and are separate from the equip costs. So yes, you get to attach it to make an 8/7 for free.
