Help with combat phase

So me and a buddy were playing and I had Two creatures out, Galerider Sliver and Virulent Sliver and he had one non flying creature out.
I tapped my two creatures to declare attackers, he pulls out Unsummon and puts Galerider Sliver back to my hand and blocks and kills my Virulent Sliver with one of his creatures since mine lost the flying ability when galerider went back to my hand
was this correct?

Do you happened to know Aether Vial when the charge counters build up do I take the counters off in order to summon, it doesn't state that I have to "use" the counters, that I just get to summon a creature equal to the amount of counters on it. and converted mana cost is "total' cost to summon the monster right?

You do not take counters off of Aether Vial in order to put the creature on the battlefield, and yes the converted mana cost of a spell is the total of all mana to cast it. Be aware with Aether Vial that you can only put a creature in with CMC of exactly the number of counters and there is normally no way to remove counters.
