Grave Betrayal

If I have Grave Betrayal out and my opponents commander dies, does Grave Betrayal take effect even if they put their commander into their command zone

When a creature dies, it goes to the graveyard. If you have Grave Betrayal on the battlefield and your opponent's commander goes to the graveyard (i.e., it is killed and your opponent chose to let it go to the gy instead of the cmd zone), betrayal's ability will trigger and the commander will come back to the battlefield under your control at the beginning of the end step as long as it is still a valid target (it has not changed zones since it died).

Your opponent cannot choose to let the commander die and then immediately move it to the cmd zone. It doesn't work like that. Now, he can choose to let it die, and then use a spell or ability to, for example, exile the commander that is in the graveyard. In that case, your opponent can choose to move it to the cmd zone or let it be exiled, and in either case, the commander will not come back to the battlefield with grave betrayal because it's no longer a valid target.

This is not correct, as answered 4 years ago...

It depends.

If your opponent actually allows the commander to die (i.e. they allow it to go from the battlefield to the graveyard), then Grave Betrayal 's ability will trigger and you will get it.

If your opponent opts to use the replacement effect to send his or her general to the command zone, the commander will never die and Grave Betrayal 's ability won't even trigger.
