Gonti, Lord of Luxury and commander

Asked by XionGard 6 years ago

I was wondering what would happen if someone used Commit on a commander and then used Gonti, Lord of Luxury, exiling the commander face down. Can replacement occur here?

If you don't want to put the commander on top of the library from Commit you don't have to, it can goto the command zone instead. However if it somehow is put onto the library, its then part of the library and Gonti can get it. I think so anyway.

If it goes to your library, graveyard, or exile, you can return it to the command zone as a replacement effect.

chaus12, I know that ruling. But the problem is it gets exiled face down and they don't actually know it is there commander getting exiled so can they still replace it?

Yeah unless someone wants you to steal their commander, it wont work. They can put it from the library to the command zone, or have it go their instead of being exiled. Thats not to say you cant steal it in other ways

I remember when the EDH RC changed the rules to get rid of tuck, they said that they wanted to know if a manfested commander would deal combat damage. In addition to making it come up less, they said that the exact location of the commander is public knowledge to all players.

The owner of the exiled card won't have any way of knowing it's their commander, so they can't apply the replacement effect to move it to the command zone.

"The location of the commander is public knowledge" is a point of principle among certain members of the Commander Rules Committee but it isn't an official part of the rules of the game. There used to be a rule that forced players to reveal commanders that were exiled face-down and immediately move them to the command zone but that rule was removed about a year ago (not too long after the change to the rules that allowed commanders to be moved to the command zone instead of the library).

The opponent who owns Gonti, Lord of Luxury would have to tell you if he exiled your commander face down.

@DRACULA150704: That rule doesn't exist anymore. The opponent doesn't have to say anything.
