Gisa and Nantuko Husk - Can something halt this interaction?

Asked by ProgenitorX 9 years ago

Besides cards that counter abilities, like Stifle, can anything really completely foil my plan at instant speed:

  1. Let's say I have 10 Zombie tokens, Nantuko Husk, and Ghoulcaller Gisa on the battlefield.
  2. I use Nantuko Husk's ability and sacrifice all the Zombie tokens to pump him (Note: I would do this one by one, letting each use resolve before issuing the next.).
  3. I use Ghoulcaller Gisa's ability and sacrifice the pumped Nantuko Husk to obtain 22 Zombie tokens (ideally).

Here is what I figure:

  • Since the sacrifices are part of the costs of the abilities, my opponent can't respond by killing the sacrificial creatures.
  • I would do each sacrifice to Nantuko separately in case someone responds with a kill/bounce spell targetting him. It would cut the plan short, but I'd still get 2+N Zombie tokens, where N is the number of times his ability resolved, by activating Gisa's ability.
  • If they kill Gisa, she would die, but her ability would be or could be put in the stack and I would get my zombies.

So besides cutting the procedure short, is there anything I'm missing that could stop it completely? I'm interested in instant speed responses my opponent can have to stop it once started. Also, don't worry about board wipes after the fact.

Thanks!

Your opponent can't respond to costs being paid to activate abilities, but they can respond to the ability that goes onto the stack.

Something that could foil your plan ... Stifle

Thanks for the reply, but I mentioned at the beginning I'm looking for responses besides ability specific instants like Stifle. I'm interested in non obvious ways involving general effects (kill spells, bounces, etc.) that could stop it completely (short of killing the Nantuko Husk as soon as it enters the battelfield or countering it as it enters the field, but in my scenario he has already resolved).

Your opponent could use something like Turn to Frog or Polymorphist's Jest to make your creatures lose their abillities.

Sudden Spoiling would be a wrench.
But yes, when you do it as carefully as you've described there's not much you can do.

magicnerd0815 he could just respond by continuing the process

the only way around it is if the opponent used Sudden Spoiling so that the Nantuko Husk triggers would go away at end of turn.

@magicnerd0815: You can still respond to those spells by activating the abilities. You'd need a split-second version like Sudden Spoiling in order to interfere in this way.

Squelch seems like a good show-stopper too

ProgenitorX Please link the cards in your title. Otherwise, only Sudden Spoiling would stop this as said before

@Prima: All of the cards were linked in the body of the post. There's no issue here.

I wasn't aware you could link cards in the title. I'll make sure to do that next time. Thanks for all the replies, especially the mention of the split second mechanic (I'd forgotten about that). Seems like I might give this a try after all, considering only a few specific cards could stop it entirely.

If you want more Nantuko Husk's, just pick up some Blood Bairns Same exact card. (P.S. Blood Bairn makes you say funny things while battling, like Watch out for my nasty child or Watch out! The child comes

@Prima, don't forget that Nantuko Husk is a Zombie Insect while Blood Bairn is a Vampire.
While everything else is the same, subtype can make a big difference.
