FS/SS Removed on stack

Asked by Randomsome1 5 years ago

I had a scenario in my playgroup that no one could agree on:

Firesong and Sunspeaker on the field, controller plays Earthquake , opponent responds by destroying FS/SS. Does Quake still have Lifelink after the removal resolves?

Earthquake will not have lifelink when it resolves.

The first ability on Firesong and Sunspeaker is a static ability. That ability only applies as long as Firesong and Sunspeaker is on the battlefield.

604.2. Static abilities create continuous effects, some of which are prevention effects or replacement effects. These effects are active as long as the permanent with the ability remains on the battlefield and has the ability, or as long as the object with the ability remains in the appropriate zone, as described in rule 112.6.

OK, so just to be clear. Earthquake is cast, gains lifelink, then when FS/SS dies, loses lifelink because it isn't under their control until it resolves?

I'm sorry, your answer is clear and great, but the wording on the card is just weird to me.

Yes.

When Earthquake is cast, the static ability of Firesong and Sunspeaker gives all red instant and sorcery spells lifelink.

However, when Firesong and Sunspeaker are removed from the battlefield, their static ability no longer provides its effects due to Firesong and Sunspeaker no longer being on the battlefield (Rule 604.2).

Therefore, Earthquake will no longer have lifelink.

For reference, if Firesong & Sun speaker had a slightly different ability, "Whenever you cast a red instant or sorcery spell, it gains lifelink", then killing the creature in response to the spell going on the stack wouldn't stop it from gaining lifelink.
